History

INTENT

At St Saviour’s RC Primary School, we believe that studying History is a fundamental part of children's education as it allows for an understanding of the past, develops critical thinking skills, and enables pupils to make informed decisions about the present and future. Our aim is to provide a History curriculum that is engaging, stimulating, and relevant to the lives of our pupils, while meeting the requirements set out in the National Curriculum. We want to equip our learners with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become active and responsible citizens who appreciate the diversity and complexity of human experience.

IMPLEMENTATION

Our History curriculum is designed to be cohesive, progressive, and inclusive. We follow the Hampshire enquiry model and the broad themes that underpin our planning and teaching are chronology, continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarities and differences and significance. These themes are explored through a range of topics that cover the local, national, and global dimensions of History, such as Early Settlement in Britain, Ancient Civilizations and the Victorians. We use a variety of resources and approaches to create a rich and meaningful learning experience for our pupils, including visits to museums and historical sites, drama and role-play, artefact analysis, storytelling, and digital technology. We aim to provide opportunities for pupils to develop their historical enquiry, interpretation, and communication skills through tasks such as asking and answering questions, conducting research, presenting findings, and evaluating sources.

IMPACT

Our History curriculum has a positive impact on the progress, attainment, and enjoyment of our pupils. We track their achievements against the National Curriculum objectives and use a range of assessment tools to inform our planning and teaching. Our pupils understand the causes and consequences of key historical events and can make connections between the past and the present. They appreciate the diversity and richness of human experience across time and place. They also acquire a wealth of skills, such as critical thinking, analysis, and communication, which are transferable to other areas of learning and life. Overall, the impact of our History curriculum is that our pupils are well-informed, reflective, and responsible citizens who understand and value the importance of the past in shaping the present and future.
